Blue light activates compounds within acne bacteria, producing molecules that destroy the bacteria and calm inflammation.
The specific wavelength of blue light is absorbed by compounds called porphyrins within acne-causing bacteria, triggering a chemical reaction that produces free radicals and causes the bacteria to die.
Blue light, typically in the 407-470 nm wavelength range, is absorbed by endogenous porphyrins produced by the bacterium Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes). This photoexcitation leads to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which induces bacterial death and reduces inflammation.
