These formulations modulate oil glands activity and promote cellular turnover to prevent pore occlusion.
These treatments gently modulate your skin's oil production and encourage healthy cell turnover. This helps prevent clogged pores.
Topical oil control agents work through various pathways. Retinoids (like Tretinoin and Adapalene) bind to retinoic acid receptors (RARs) in skin cells, which modulates gene expression to decrease sebocyte proliferation and sebum synthesis. Adapalene specifically has been shown to inhibit triacylglycerol biosynthesis. Salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxy acid, is oil-soluble, allowing it to penetrate into pores to dissolve excess sebum and dead skin cells (a keratolytic effect). Niacinamide's exact mechanism for sebum reduction is not fully defined, but clinical studies show it significantly lowers sebum excretion rates.
