An implanted device mechanically or hydraulically facilitates a firm, controllable erection.
A surgical procedure places either inflatable cylinders and a pump or bendable rods inside the penis to provide mechanical rigidity for an erection.
Penile implants function by either providing a rigid, bendable structure (malleable implants) or by allowing for hydraulic inflation of cylinders placed within the corpora cavernosa (inflatable implants). Inflatable systems involve two cylinders, a scrotal pump, and an abdominal reservoir, enabling on-demand erection and flaccidity. Malleable implants consist of silicone rods that are manually positioned.
