- Use a cold pack for swelling
- Expect redness, swelling, and a sunburn-like sensation for 24-48 hours. Blistering or crusting can occur; allow it to heal naturally. Keep the area clean and moisturized with an occlusive ointment. Fading of the darkened ink happens gradually over 6-8 weeks as your body clears the particles. Results start to show in 6–8 weeks.

How it works, and common myths

Specific laser wavelengths precisely fragment the chemically altered, darkened ink particles, allowing the body's lymphatic system to clear them.

A little more technical

Specialized lasers deliver ultra-short energy pulses to photomechanically shatter the newly darkened ink particles that were chemically altered by a previous laser treatment, allowing the body's immune system to clear them away.

Paradoxical darkening occurs from the chemical reduction of ferric oxide (Fe2O3, reddish-brown) to ferrous oxide (FeO, black) or the reduction of titanium dioxide (TiO2) within the tattoo pigment, triggered by the heat from nanosecond lasers. Subsequent treatments with picosecond lasers, which rely more on a photoacoustic than a photothermal effect, can fragment these newly formed black particles without generating as much heat, allowing for phagocytic clearance.
