Gently clean the area as instructed by your surgeon, typically starting after the first 24-48 hours.
After your visit
- Avoid hard exercise, heat and heavy sweating for 1–2 weeks
- No direct sun for several weeks
- Don't pick, peel or scratch for 8 days
- Don't touch, rub or press the area for 8 days
- Sleep with your head raised
- Once the new hairs grow, you will need to trim them regularly (e.g., once a month).
- Expect tiny scabs and mild redness/swelling for the first week. Scabs typically fall off within 7-10 days. Transplanted hairs will shed around 2-4 weeks post-op (normal 'shock loss'). Results start to show in 3–4 months, as new hairs grow. Final results show around 12 months.

Side effects, and who should wait

Who may want to think twice

Alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition causing hair loss.
Trichotillomania, a disorder involving compulsive hair pulling.
Bleeding disorders.
A history of poor wound healing or keloid scarring.
Insufficient healthy donor hair on the scalp.
Pregnancy (planned cosmetic surgery waits until after the baby is born)

Possible side effects

Common

Swelling and bruising around the eyes.
Redness in the brow area.
Formation of tiny scabs around each transplanted hair.
Temporary numbness in the donor or recipient area.
Initial shedding of the transplanted hairs (shock loss) after 2-4 weeks, which is normal before new growth begins.

Less common

Infection.
Inflamed hair follicles (folliculitis).
Scarring at the donor or recipient site.
Unnatural hair growth direction if not placed correctly.
Permanent numbness if nerve damage occurs.
