Before you go
Wash your hair and face thoroughly the morning of the procedure.

Follow the specific washing instructions provided by your clinic, which usually involves gentle cleansing after the first 24-48 hours.
After your visit
- Sleep with your head raised for the first few nights
- Avoid hard exercise, heat and heavy sweating for 1–2 weeks
- No swimming or baths for 1–2 weeks
- No hard exercise or heavy lifting for 1 week
- No direct sun for several weeks
- Don't shave for 10–14 days, and only once your surgeon says yes
- Don't pick, peel or scratch for 1 week
- Don't touch, rub or press the area for 1 week
- The first week involves redness, swelling, and small scabs around each graft. Scabs typically fall off within 7-10 days. Between weeks 2 and 8, transplanted hairs may shed in a phase called 'shock loss'—this is normal. New, permanent hair growth begins around months 3-4, with more noticeable density by month 6. The final, mature result is visible at 12 months.

Active scarring alopecia conditions (e.g., lichen planopilaris, frontal fibrosing alopecia)
Alopecia areata (unless inactive for at least two years)
Bleeding disorders or use of anticoagulant medications

Unrealistic expectations or Body Dysmorphic Disorder
Pregnancy (planned cosmetic surgery waits until after the baby is born)

A little more technical

Surgeons transplant individual hair follicles from a donor area, typically the back of the scalp, to the face. This creates a fuller, denser beard.

Autologous follicular unit transplantation involves harvesting hair grafts from a donor site, typically the occipital scalp, and implanting them into the facial recipient area. The transplanted follicles retain their original genetic characteristics (donor dominance) and continue to grow.
