- The initial week involves significant pain and discomfort, managed with medication. Strictly avoid direct pressure on the buttocks; this means sleeping on your stomach or side and using a specialized 'BBL pillow' for brief sitting. Swelling and bruising can last for several weeks. Light activities may resume after 1-2 weeks. Full recovery, including strenuous exercise, typically takes 6-8 weeks.

Smokers (as smoking impairs healing and fat graft survival).
Individuals with a history of blood clots or poor circulation.
People with uncontrolled chronic conditions like diabetes or heart disease.
Those with unrealistic expectations about the outcome.

Possible side effects

Common

Significant pain, soreness, and throbbing, especially in the first few days.
Bruising and swelling in both the donor and recipient sites.
Numbness or changes in skin sensation.
Scarring at incision sites.
Contour irregularities or asymmetry.
Fat necrosis (firm lumps where transferred fat cells have died).
Some of the moved fat is lost in the first year.

Less common

Infection at the incision sites.
Seroma (fluid accumulation under the skin).
Hematoma (blood accumulation under the skin).
Blood clots, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
Fat getting into the blood and reaching the lungs, which can be fatal.

How it works, and common myths

Viable fat cells are meticulously transferred from one body area to the gluteal region, where they integrate and establish new blood supply for permanent volume.

A little more technical

Fat is removed from a donor area of the body using liposuction, processed to isolate pure, healthy fat cells, and then injected into the buttocks to increase volume and improve contour.

Autologous adipose tissue is harvested via liposuction from a donor site. The lipoaspirate is then processed through methods like centrifugation or filtration to separate viable adipocytes from blood, oil, and other fluids. This purified fat is then reinjected in small aliquots into the subcutaneous plane of the gluteal region to augment volume and enhance contour. The survival of the graft depends on revascularization from the surrounding tissue.
